What Contemporary Architecture is not!
Designing and building something different from what was done in the past is the desire of those who choose to remain faithful to the principles of contemporary architecture, but what exactly does this mean? Discover, in this article, what contemporary architecture is not!
What (isn’t) contemporary architecture?
It is not modernism or futurism. It is not an architectural movement like classical or baroque. It is, instead, a set of architectural choices that remain isolated from what normally is. In general, contemporary architecture is based on the design of unique structures that are based on the values and culture of the 21st century.
Contrary to what one might think, contemporary architecture is not a static style. With the application of the latest construction techniques, it seeks to change and evolve according to the pressing needs of today's society. In other words, inevitably, contemporary architecture always aims to break with standard processes and models, remaining in constant evolution. She is deeply eclectic and uses a diverse set of influences and mediums to create something never seen before.
Contemporary architecture: a multitude of choices
Contemporary architecture can offer a multitude of architectural choices. However, this multiplicity does not prevent some common features from being easily recognizable. Among them, we highlight three:
1. Energy efficiency
THEsustainable constructionand energy efficiency are necessary characteristics of contemporary architecture. The use of photovoltaic cells for heating, heat pumps or thermal collectors are examples of mechanisms used to integrate the building with its natural environment. Likewise, in contemporary architecture, it is also common to use new materials, both inside and outside. Materials such as carbon fiber or bamboo are alternatives to so-called traditional materials. In this sense, there are also those who reuse waste for construction, such as transforming plastic bottles into resistant walls. Ultimately, the possibilities are endless!
2. Volume Composition
Contemporary architecture is distinguished by aa differentiated volume composition. When using straight lines, those who venture into the paths of contemporary architecture always seek to create surprising and unusual shapes. The same happens with the curved and rounded lines, a composition that allows the creation of interior spaces with unusual layouts.
3. Maximum use of natural light
An undeniable characteristic of contemporary architecture is the use of large windows or openings to make maximum use of natural light. Panoramic windows, glazed walls or skylights are a true must-have in contemporary architecture. With strategic and unusual placements, these light sources serve the purpose ofilluminate and warm the interior space, while providing exceptional views.
Some examples of contemporary architecture
In contemporary architecture, the most successful examples are designed in response to the character of the time and the spatial quality of the context. As with any design, understanding the place and using a different approach are crucial aspects. Check out some examples!
